Argentina Football League: Primera División Argentina… Introduction and Format

March 22, 2010

The Primera División is the top level of Argentine football league, and is organized by the Argentine Football Association. Founded in 1893, it is currently composed of 20 teams. The Argentine league is regarded as one of the strongest leagues in the football world. Teams from Argentina have won the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and the now defunct Intercontinental Cup more than any other country.

The 2009 Apertura, the most recent tournament, was won by Banfield. River Plate is the most successful club in the league’s history with 33 championships. The 20 teams play two single round-robin tournaments each year: the Clausura, from February to June, and the Apertura, from August to December. Thus, there are two champions each season. Unlike most European countries, Argentina has no official cup competition.

The names of the tournaments, “Clausura”, literally means Closing, and “Apertura”, literally means Opening, reflect Northern Hemisphere sports seasons. This scheme was introduced in 1990 to replace the austral season, and was at the time alien to Argentines — who live in the Southern Hemisphere and are used to sports seasons that span a single calendar year (for example 2004, as opposed to 2004/05). Since then, many South and Central American leagues adopted the format, including Uruguay, Mexico and Chile, although Uruguay is to return to austral season in 2009.

Argentina qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a 1–0 win against Uruguay. Argentina world cup tickets are available on Ticket4football which also provides the fans with the easiest way to get their world cup football tickets online. February 17, 2010

The 1986 FIFA World Cup, the 13th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June.

Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to host the competition and officially resigned in 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format, although unlike the previous edition in 1982, the second round of the tournament was played on a knock-out basis rather than groups. Although the heat and altitude of Mexico would seem to favour Latin American teams, the likes of Belgium, France and West Germany all progressed to the later stages of the competition. But it was eventually won by Argentina (second title after 1978), who beat West Germany 3–2 in the final at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca.

Argentina and England football rivalry

December 16, 2009

The Argentina and England football rivalry is a highly competitive sports rivalry that exists between the national football teams of the two countries, as well as their respective sets of fans. Games between the two teams, even those that are only friendly matches, are often marked by notable and sometimes controversial incidents.

The rivalry emerged across several games during the latter half of the 20th century, even though as of 2008 the teams have played each other on only 14 occasions in full internationals. It was driven by various controversial incidents, particularly those in the games played between the teams at the 1966 and 1986 FIFA World Cups. The rivalry was also intensified, particularly in Argentina, by a non-footballing event, the 1982 Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas) between Argentina and the United Kingdom. However despite the intense rivalry between the national sides and its high media and public profile, numerous Argentine players have played for English club sides with few problems, with many such as Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa becoming extremely popular with fans in England.

Both the teams are world’s best teams and have qualified for the FIFA world cup 2010. To witness the great moments you can get Argentina world cup tickets and England world cup tickets online.

Argentina and Brazil football rivalry

December 12, 2009

The Argentina and Brazil football rivalry is a highly competitive sports rivalry that exists between the national football teams of the two countries, as well as their respective sets of fans. Games between the two teams, even those that are only friendly matches, are often marked by notable and sometimes controversial incidents. This Rivalry is also called ‘The Battle of the South Americans’.

The origins of the football rivalry between Argentina and Brazil can be traced to before football became so popular in both countries. During the colonization of the Americas, Spain and Portugal often fought each other to gain control over vast territories.

Today few remember wars and other political confrontations between both countries, and only recall matches, victories, goals and other sport-related incidents. Their rivalry is found in almost all sports, but a men’s football match between Argentina and Brazil is one that neither side wants to lose, and often acquires more importance than the championship within which it takes place.

To exemplify the intensity of this rivalry, is enough to remember that after the 1946 incidents, the two teams did not play against each other for ten years; either team would decline to play a given cup so that they would never have to play against the neighbouring country.

Once again both the teams have qualified for the world cup 2010, and world is going to witness the traditional rivalry of them.
